UHV (STM) JT Cryostat

The UHV (STM) JT (Joule Thomson) Cryostat is a JT stage (< 1 K) mounted on an ultra-low loss helium bath cryostat with a nitrogen shield and two vapor cooled radiation shields for added performance. The system was initially conceptualized for STM, TEM and AFM measurements, whereby ultra-low vibrations are required for atomic resolution. The JT stage allows the system to work down to 450 mK (3He) or 1.0 K (4He), with little to no additional helium consumption. With its high performance and compact design, this system is a staple of the SPM community. As with all our systems, the UHV JT Cryostats can be modified to best suit your individual needs.

Technical specifications

  • Fully UHV / XHV compatible, can be baked up to 150°C
  • SPM / STM / AFM compatible
  • Base temperature: 450 mK (3He) or 1.0 K (4He)
  • The JT stage can be used in both continuous or single shot mode
  • The same system can be used with either Helium 4 or Helium 3 (without modification to the cryostat)
  • Compact design: 10 LHe / 21 LN2 configurations
  • Ultra-low cryogenic consumption LHe / LN2: > 120 hours and > 250 hours hold time, respectively
  • The JT stage does not have a hold time in continuous mode
  • DN250 / 300CF base flanges, for easy integration
  • Fully customizable cold plate, radiation shield, and design
